Automated Visual Inspection of Lead

Surface mount components such as IC chips usually require 100 percent inspection prior to automatic insertion. Automated Visual Inspection to determine bent or missing leads and measurement of the lead separation width is necessary to ensure defect free products. A Smart Vision Sensor has been designed for such applications.

JANUARY 12, 2006 (ASIA PACIFIC) - Automated visual inspection works in place of the human eye to perform complicated and accurate inspections by processing images using cameras at high speeds. With the current market demands for variable-product production with improved product quality, having a highly effective inspection system is inevitable.

Surface mount components usually required 100 percent inspection prior to automatic insertion. Surface mount applications require precise positioning of all components due to the small size of leads and pitch. These delicate leads bend and break easily.

Inspection requirements usually include the following:

  • Detection of the lead width on the capacitors or other electronics components

  • Detection of bent/missing leads

Lead presence is verified by counting the number of edges found across the part's length. Lead separation can be confirmed by pattern matching. Bent and missing leads can be detected via width and count function.

Omron's ZFV smart sensor provides seven high-level matching capabilities (shape, brightness, text, position, area, width and number) for a wide range of applications that is easy to implement and cost effective. The high-speed vision sensor includes built-in lighting and an amplifier with embedded LCD monitor that provides real-time grayscale measurement displays to show good and bad parts at a glance. Production settings can be updated for fast changeover with minimum downtime.

The ultra-high speed response is best used in fast-moving production lines. With a four-millisecond response time, ultra fast inspections can be carried out at up to 10,000 parts per minute. Pattern matching function is used to search for the OK pattern and differentiate from the NGs while the width function is able to measure widths between leads. The count function enables counting of the number of leads from the IC chips. This is also applicable to applications like counting of connector pins. Hence, bent/missing leads can be differentiated and filtered out. The Omron ZFV-SR10 provides a narrow view with focus adjustment enabling sensing of small work pieces like IC chips.
